White Rose Varsity Tournament - Taking its name from the 15th Century Wars of the Roses where York were represented by the white rose the White Rose Varsity Tournament is a sports competition between the two York-based universities in the UK; University of York and York St John College. Started in 2005 by AU-president Stuart Leslie of the York University and his counterpart from York St John College, it is hoped to be continued as an annual event.

However, after 15 years of joint research by an Australian company Florigene, and Japanese company Suntory, a blue rose was created in 2004 using genetic engineering.
